Total House Mouse Control In Holly Springs

What’s not to love about the outdoors, the green grass and flowers in bloom? Some Holly Springs residents are already excited for the flourish of Spring. What happens, however, when the outdoors won’t stay outdoors? The most common home invader is the house mouse.

All About Mice

Mice are nocturnal and colorblind. Small, round, and covered in short hairs, these insidious little creatures are a common problem for homeowners everywhere. Mice, being socially minded animals, prefer to live in family groups and burrow and build nests. Although there are dozens of mice species worldwide, the most common by far is the house mouse.

They are omnivorous, meaning they eat both meat and plants, but they are also quick to adapt to eat whatever is on hand. In times of famine, mice will even cannibalize one another. Mice have a short lifespan of one to two years; however, they make good use of this time; in ideal conditions, one pair of mice and their offspring can produce up to 8,000 babies in one year. With their large numbers and inclination for living close to humans, they are well known for the damage they cause.

What Damage Do Mice Cause?

Mice are responsible for a lot of structural damage to both buildings and machines. They chew through wood, paper, plastic, and fabric – often shredding these materials up for their nests. Mice will also chew through drywall and plaster, destroy ductwork, and burrow beneath floors or within wall cavities. They are notorious for causing electrical fires after chewing on wiring. In fact, according to the Organization of Real Estate Professionals, it is estimated that rodents cause up to 20% of all undetermined house fires. Mice can also infest machinery like stoves, tractors, and cars. Mice often find their way into a car via a vent, cracked window, or an open trunk.

What Health Problems Do Mice Cause?

Just as mice can spell trouble for your property, they can also be very dangerous to your health. Mice carry a plethora of diseases, filth, and parasites. Some common diseases to watch for are:

  • Salmonella: a bacteria commonly found in mice feces, that causes salmonellosis. In humans, salmonellosis causes stomach pain, diarrhea, and fever.
  • Leptospirosis: a bacterial disease transmitted from a mouse to a human when a human eats or drinks from a source contaminated with the urine of the infected mouse. Mice can also transmit leptospirosis to household pets. While in humans, leptospirosis usually causes a flu-like illness, and in some cases, it can lead to organ damage.
  •  Lyme disease – mice often carry Lyme disease-infected ticks. The usual symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash in the shape of a bullseye.

It’s disconcerting to know that mice breed prolifically, and the more mice you have in your home, the more likely they are to cause problems for you and your loved ones. Whether it’s diseases or property damage, it’s no laughing matter when it comes to mice.
